I have always fancied
poets who
chronicle junkets with
word play and metaphors
Say, Cambodia as prepossessing
or a Nordic skyline- a tapestry of hues.

But a sketch of places, un-moving picture shows in watercolor
Depicted by an artist
on an immaculate-white of paper
is poetry all the same
adjectives represented by lines
metaphors, by colors.

hi sir robert!

i remember the day i saw your sketches on your facebook account.. and asked you your route when you did your backpacking in southeast asia + china.. well, i was inspired to do my own trip! i did manila-bangkok-chiang mai-luang prabang-vang vieng-vientiene-hanoi+halong bay-kunming-dali-lijiang-hong kong-manila.. and it was amazing! kahit mag-isa lang ako.. i did met a lot of backpackers along the way, learn a lot from them, learn a lot from the places i've been, learn more about my self & appreciate my country more! right now, i'm planning to have a backpacking trip in the Philippines by cluster like manila-davao-bukidnon-cagayan de oro-camiguin-bohol-cebu-manila

i hope you can start your 2nd book about traveling in the Philippines on a shoestring budget! i hope Philippine can be ready for backpackers asap so they can include us to the southeast asian backpacking route = good for the economy! :)

all the best idol!

Hi Robert, Free book? Am I cynical or what? If I stopped being cynical, will you give me a free copy of your book. It's a question of faith overcoming mistrust. I admire you for having time to backpack, walk around, sketch, look at the birds and smell the flowers. I have to do that sometime, before it's too late. Keep up the Peter Pan image, you seem getting younger every time I see you on TV.

thanks and keep on walkin'! :)

Hello Kuya Robert,

I'm Eman from Dynamic Teens and I am very fascinated by what you are doing, sketching, travelling being adventurous. I wasn't given the talent to draw but I have the sense to appreciate it. The only adventure I have is with my fellow DTs when we reach out to unschooled children in slums and dumpsites and streets. I would like to win a book of yours so I can inspire my Kariton Klasrum students who are gifted in sketching and drawing. Especially Cris who's a former scavenger and now is fond of sketching, we bought him a sketchpad for Christmas 2008. I hope I have a good reason to win a book. God loves you for sharing your talents and resources to others.

I'll be delighted to tell kids more stories about our neighbor countries and how they can also go and experience more about what you tell in your book. As always, i'm always at awe with your presence and your works sir Robert. Ang galing! I hope I'd get a copy to be inspired and get have my confidence in illustrating again and finding my style. And pretty much, your book reminds me of Graig Thompson. He did a graphic novel of his travels.. he draws/sketches them more than writes about it. Ang galing n'yo! Just can't remember the title of that graphic novel I really have a bad memory of names and titles :(

Hope I'll be lucky to have a copy of your book and meet you again (and ma-starstruck ulit!) Ü

Thanks and God bless you always Ü

Dear Mr. Robert,
I too would like a copy of your book. I remember reading and watching the Accidental Tourist, and for somebody who is tied to a chair and the files that pile up in front of one's face more than twelve hours a day, talking to every body who has a complaint and hearing the same whish whish of people moving away so fast, to read about a place and see the place in one's mind to get there through words and pictures, to have a respite from this city and its worries.... would be a veritable treasure for the world weary.

Thank you,

even if I don't win, I'd be happy to know its out there. That place where words and pictures and experience is there somewhere.

Hello Kuya Robert! This is Karlo, one of your fb friends. hehe

I have read about this on your wall, so here I am, expressing my desire to win a copy. haha I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!! LET ME WIN A SIGNED COPY OF YOUR WORK KUYA ROBERT!!!!!!(desperately asking. lols) It would be a great gift especially to a struggling nurse like me. hehe I think it's a unique and an interesting idea to relay your travel adventures in sketches aside from photos and texts. =)

I would like to believe that I'm a nurse with a heart of a traveler (hehe), so I'm sure your book would be an added inspiration for me to see more interesting places and experience more travel adventures in my lifetime. It would be a great guide and I guess it would provide me with great peview of a backpacker's life. One thing that I would really love to try out.

I have experienced staying in a hostel during my solitary adventure in HK, and I can't help but smile whenever I remember it. Imagine staying in a place for 4 days where no one speaks English! hehe Just thankful that I survived! hehe

THANK YOU in advance kuya Robert! (kidding! haha!) I really would love to have a copy. =)

I attended your backpacking seminar at ROX but I was not able to buy your book, financial crisis maybe?? Hehehe.. Anyway I was too hesitant to approach you and browse your private sketch pad. Until now I still regret it. I was always amazed on how you kept your drawings seemed so simple yet so admirable. I also sketch and I love backpacking trips. After the talk, I felt that I was just exploring a bit of land I was standing on. I was quite contented on watching discovery channel or nat geo, suntok sa buwan lang naman kung makarating ako sa Antartica diba? 6 paychecks I have received, I set aside a part of my money. ^_^

Salamat sa inspirasyon ninyo! Mahusay!

I've always thought of backpacking as a romantic/daring dream to accomplish. But I keep thinking it's too expensive, tiring, dangerous... plus the language barrier, the bathroom facilities, getting lost... I hope to be proven otherwise :)

hello Kuya Robert :)

I used to watch Probe way way back because I'm waiting for your segment. I watch because I'm waiting for you to draw anything from your experience. I love the lighthouses episode and the pawikans. I said to myself, one day I'll do the same. And now, I'm doing it. You're my inspiration of having a journal/sketchbook on my backpack everytime I travel and eventually became a "Biyahe" exhibit in Chockiss and in Bliss in Baguio. I'm so excited about your book and what's inside it. I'm sure every page is a delight. Can't wait.

I just want to share this story for the world to get to know you more, Mr. Alejandro =). Majority of my working life is spent working in TV productions, never a big fan of celebrities (I know the real them) and maybe because I can see auras. I easily recognize celebrities with the sincerest smiles and a big hearts. One day in Eat Bulaga (where I worked before), while my colleagues were busy with the biggest names in showbusiness, I was busy admiring the art you were doin with our hosts' signatures. You even never hesitated to make one for me, a nobody in a crowd of celebrities lining up to get one of your "art".
That art is proudly displayed in my parents' home along with my paintings =)
You are one of fewest people in the industry with a good soul.
I was humbled by how you treat people equally. Thank you.

My dearest Robert,

You are very blessed with a wonderful talent of observation. An artist like you will have thousands of inspired citizens of the world who wish that they have your talent and understanding of what is vital to capture at a very specfic moment. Be thankful you have the keen eyes and hands that will explore all the possibilities of an instance. Kudos to you, my friend!

Always,
BET

OMG do I love this book! What a wonderful gift. Since this gypsy caravan has gotten on the road i find myself getting to sleep latter and later. (or earlier in the morning that is--lol). I REALLY want to visit as many sites as possible. I have just been amazed at the generosity and talent of the artists participating here. What a tribute to Lisa and our collective humanity! I'm enjoying each one. It was great stopping here and if you have a chance please stop by to see me at

Great sketches, love the concept, love the blog name. I've been a traveling nomadic artist, living on the road and painting the many landscapes, & seascapes of Australia. One day I plan to make some of them into a book combined with the food we cooked and ate and the patterns of the creations I created, from the environment.
